2022

January 1, 2022

The ballots have been submitted and tallied.

Before proceeding, I just wanted to mention that, once again this year, it was very satisfying to see so many new posters participating in this process. We welcome and encourage you to participate not only in our occasional votes and contests, but also to participate in the various Reader Posts threads.

New voices and perspectives are always welcome. We urge you to enrich the site with your participation in Reader Posts if it’s something that interests you. Remember, there’s no one else out there who possesses your exact combination of experiences, opinions, and insights. We encourage you to share your wisdom with your fellow Bill James Online members.

Here are the results of the 2022 Gallery of Renown voting:

There were 60 ballots submitted this year, up from the 53 we had last year. Thanks to everyone who took the time to submit a ballot and for continuing to support the memory of our friend Bob Gregory and his brainchild.

Remember that points were awarded MVP-style: 10 players per ballot, in order, with 14 points for each 1st place, 11 points for 2nd place, 8 points for 3rd, then 7-6-5-4-3-2-1.  If a ballot was submitted with fewer than 10 names, I did not include it in the results.

Below are the results, sorted by point total, pending any corrections that our independent auditors may notice. Also, it shows the breakdown of how many of each “place” they received (# of 1st place votes, # of 2nd place votes, etc.), as well as the total points received, the number of total votes (that is, how many ballots that the player was included on), and the % of ballots in which the candidate was included.

No player was named on all 60 ballots, and 36 players received at least one vote. 11 different players received at least 1 first place vote.

According to the structure of this voting, the top 2 point recipients are inducted into the Gallery of Renown. Congratulations to Alex Rodriguez and Larry Walker! We’ll start working on the plaques immediately.

David Ortiz, Scott Rolen, Vlad Guerrero, Manny Ramirez, and Roy Halladay, were fairly close in in 3rd through 7th place. Gary Sheffield, Kenny Lofton, and Todd Helton rounded out the top 10. All of these players will return for next year’s voting.

Rodriguez received the highest number of first place votes – he was the #1 player on 35 of the 60 ballots (58%). Ortiz had the second highest number of first-place votes (6).

Only 3 players were named on 80% or more of the ballots – Walker (88.3%), Rolen (85%), and Guerrero (80%).
